Information for first term Bachelor students at the Faculty of Engineering

At the Faculty of Engineering, the lecture period for WS 2020/2021 begins on November 2, 2020.

The first semester was planned in such a way that all courses (lectures and exercises) at the Faculty of Engineering can be taken online.

The System Design Project is planned for the first semester according to the curriculum. To participate you will need to be present on site on at least three occasions, which will be determined in the beginning of November. If this is not possible for you, we recommend you to postpone this course until your 3rd semester. / Edited October 27, 2020

For the following first-semester courses, we might also offer options to participate in presence (e.g. in small groups, rolling systems, broadcasting to several lecture halls...), as soon as the Covid 19 infection rates allow it. For the moment, most are only offered online. Details can be found in the course descriptions in the campus management system HISinOne.

  1. Einführung in die Programmierung (lecture and exercise) / Edited October 27, 2020 > Switched to ONLINE

Please be aware that you must be present in person in order to take the exams at the end of the lecture period (from mid-February to the end of March).

We strongly recommend participating in the digital orientation day for new undergraduate students on October 30, 2020. There you will find important information about your respective courses, study plans,  examination regulations as well as practical tips from the student council. You can find the detailed program for that day here.

In the week before the start of lectures in the winter semester, the student council offers a preliminary math course (German only) for beginners of all Bachelor's programs at the Faculty of Engeering. You can choose whether you prefer to participate in person or online.

An overview about the most important topics for new students you can also find on this website: https://www.tf.uni-freiburg.de/en/studies-and-teaching/a-to-z-study-faq/freshers-info

The University's central contact points also provide various helpful offers for first-term students, e.g. the Studienstart app, the general official university kick-off event "Studienstart Uni Freiburg 2020" on October 23, 2020 or the Welcome Days for international students.

Information for Bachelor students in higher semesters at the Faculty of Engineering

In the winter semester 2020/21 all courses (except for lab courses and projects) can be taken online. In addition to the online offer, some lecturers will offer on-campus sessions, adhering to the Covid-19 regulations (in small groups or in a rotation system).

Written exams can only be taken on-campus. If you choose a course that according to the description in HisinOne is assessed in any other way (e.g. oral exam), please check with the lecturer whether you can take the exam online.

To find out detailed information about how a specific course will be offered (livestream or lecture recordings, additional on-campus sessions or not) please check the HisinOne course catalog and (if applicable) the information given on the professor’s website or in ILIAS. If you can’t find the information there, the lecturer will probably provide the details once you have booked his/her course. So, make sure to book the courses, you are interested in, and make sure to do so on time (check the booking periods and deadlines for the different types of courses).

For Bachelor students: Information on the BOK area from Zentrum für Schlüsselqualifikationen

The "Center for Key Qualifications" (Zentrum für Schlüsselqualifikationen ZfS) has created audio presentations for new Bachelor students to clarify the usual questions about the BOK (Berufsfeld orientierte Kompetenzen) area:
What is the BOK area? What courses are there? Can I choose freely? How many ECTS points would I receive? How do I register these courses?

https://www.zfs.uni-freiburg.de/de/infos-fuer/studienanfaenger_innen

(website in German only)

The presentations are divided into different target groups (Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Arts, polyvalenter 2-Hauptfach-Bachelor), so please make sure that you get the right one!

Information for first term Master students at the Faculty of Engineering

At the Faculty of Engineering, the lecture period for WS 2020/2021 begins on November 2, 2020.

In winter semester 2020/21 all courses (except for lab courses and projects) can be taken online. In addition to the online offer, some lecturers will offer on-campus sessions. Written exams can only be taken on-campus.

International students who cannot come to Freiburg in the winter semester 2020/21 can matriculate (enroll) as off-campus students. However, you should be aware that most of the exams are written exams which can only be taken in Freiburg. The exams will take place between 15 February and 31 March 2021. If you cannot be in Freiburg in February, you will have to postpone the exams to a later semester. This may lead to an extension of your study duration by one semester or more. Furthermore, you should consider that courses or tutorials, which are streamed live, might take place at inconvenient times for you, depending on where you are located.

The orientation events for new Master students will be held online in the week 26 - 30 of October, 2020. More detailed information can be found here.

The University's central contact points also provide various helpful offers for first-term students, e.g. the Studienstart app, the general official university kick-off event "Studienstart Uni Freiburg 2020" on October 23, 2020 or the Welcome Days for international students.
