Registering for Projects

The procedure for registering projects is different from registering for lectures, seminars or lab courses. There is no big list of ready-to-do projects in the study planner in HISinOne, as they are individually organized research projects  (comparable to the final thesis; you might think of the project as a kind of "trial run" with less strict regulations).

Therefore, before you can register a project, you must first find a topic as well as a supervisor.

Finding a topic for a project:

Think about which subject area interests you, and where your strengths lie or where you already have some prior knowledge from lectures. Then look for the 2-3 chairs/working groups that are most "related" to the topic (for computer science see https://www.informatik.uni-freiburg.de/divisions , for MSE see https://www.imtek.de/laboratories/laboratories) and take a look at their websites. Sometimes topics for projects are already available there as suggestions, or instructions are given on how to ask for a project topic in the respective group. In any case, you should seek a personal conversation (with the professor or also with the scientific staff there) and discuss possible topics.

Once you have found a topic and all organizational details (expectations and goals, time frame, etc.) have been clarified with the supervisor, then comes the official registration.

Registering for projects:

First of all, some information about registration periods and deadlines: Projects can be registered and started throughout the entire semester; the general exam registration deadlines do not apply. Under certain circumstances, a project can even be completed across semesters; in this case, the official registration should be done for the semester in which you complete the project and the supervisor will grade it!

Registration by mail to Ms. Moses at the Dean's Office:

Please mail the information listed under your study program below to Ms. Moses in the Dean's Office (moses@tf.uni-freiburg.de).

Ms. Moses will then create the project element in HISinOne under the chosen project name as an individual "course" in the corresponding semester and add you as a participant.
Afterwards, the examination office will be informed and the supervisor will be added as "examiner" to the corresponding assessment(s) (graded assessment (PL) or pass/fail assessment (SL)). In addition, you will be registered by the examination office for the achievement (SL and/ or PL, depending on what your examination regulations require).
