Registering for Projects
The procedure for registering projects is different from registering for lectures, seminars or lab courses. There is no big list of ready-to-do projects in the study planner in HISinOne, as they are individually organized research projects (comparable to the final thesis; you might think of the project as a kind of "trial run" with less strict regulations).
Therefore, before you can register a project, you must first find a topic as well as a supervisor.
Finding a topic for a project (all except SSE):
Think about which subject area interests you, and where your strengths lie or where you already have some prior knowledge from lectures. Then look for the 2-3 chairs/working groups that are most "related" to the topic (for computer science see https://www.informatik.uni-freiburg.de/divisions , for MSE see https://www.imtek.de/laboratories/laboratories) and take a look at their websites. Sometimes topics for projects are already available there as suggestions, or instructions are given on how to ask for a project topic in the respective group. In any case, you should seek a personal conversation (with the professor or also with the scientific staff there) and discuss possible topics.
Once you have found a topic and all organizational details (expectations and goals, time frame, etc.) have been clarified with the supervisor, then comes the official registration.
Registering for projects (all except SSE):
First of all, some information about registration periods and deadlines: Projects can be registered and started throughout the entire semester; the general exam registration deadlines do not apply. Under certain circumstances, a project can even be completed across semesters; in this case, the official registration should be done for the semester in which you complete the project and the supervisor will grade it!
Please do bear in mind, however, that you do register your project in time: This is usually done during the first few weeks of the practical work. The Board of Examiners will refuse to accept a project that has already been completed and is only then being registered!
PLEASE NOTE: CHANGE TO THE REGISTRATION PROCEDURE! (From 25 June 2026)
Please register by email with the examinations office; do NOT send your registration to Ms. Moses (Dean’s Office) any longer.
Please mail the information listed under your study programme below to the examinations office (pruefungsamt@tf.uni-freiburg.de).
From now on, no special course/project elements will be created; instead, course work (SL) and graded assessment (PL) will be registered directly. This removes one step from the process and makes things slightly simpler, both organisationally and within the HISinOne system. However, the individual (and therefore manual) processing of your registration will remain in place.
Registering for projects (only M.Sc. SSE):
You should register for the “Master Project SSE – Colloquium” via HISinOne during the normal periods for class registration. Join the ILIAS course to learn more about the organization and available topics. Send the title of your topic, registration number, and contact information of your advisor (email) to Prof. Ambacher by the deadline stated in ILIAS. Do not forget to register for the pass/fail assessment (SL) during the normal periods for exam registration.
