Master of Science in Computer Science (Informatik)

The Master of Science in Computer Science (Informatik) is open to both, graduates of the University of Freiburg and graduates from other institutions,  who have obtained a first degree (Bachelor's or equivalent) in computer science or in a closely related field (computer engineering, information technology, mathematics).

Application deadlines for the winter semester 2018!

The application deadline for Non-EU nationals is 1 JUNE. That means the hard copies of your documents have to reach our admissions office at latest on 1 June. EU nationals can send their application documents latest by 15 July.

From 20 March 2018 on you can apply for the winter semester 2018 via the online application portal. After that, print the pdf document, sign it and send it by regular mail (not by e-mail) to the address below together with the following documents:

  • A certified and (if necessary) translated copy (German or English) of your undergraduate diploma. If you have not yet completed your undergraduate studies, a certified transcript of marks is sufficient.
  • A certified and (if necessary) translated copy (German or English) of your transcript of marks showing all courses taken and marks obtained as well as the current average grade.
  • A certified and (if necessary) translated copy of your secondary school certificate
  • Proof of English proficiency (TOEFL, IELTS or Cambridge Certificate)*
  • General GRE test (strongly recommended; all sections are important!)
  • Curriculum vitae or résumé
  • APS certificate (only for applicants from China, Mongolia and Vietnam)


Additional documents that can be useful to submit: University entrance exam result from your home country (if applicable), GATE result (India), certificate about your rank in class, certificate about the average grade of your batch.

* Language certificates:

  • The following English language certificates are accepted: TOEFL, IELTS, Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English, Cambridge Certificate of Advanced English.
  • Only native speakers are exempted from submitting one of the above mentioned English language certificates. A confirmation that the medium of instruction at your university was English is not sufficient.
  • The minimum IELTS score required is 7.0. The minimum TOEFL score required 95.
  • IELTS and TOEFL scores should be sent by the testing centre to the University of Freiburg (institutional code 7125 for ETS; the address for IELTS is the same as for your application). Alternatively, you may send a certified hard copy.


Application deadlines (= receipt of hard copies!)

•    Winter Semester: 1 June (for non-EU citizens), 15 July (for EU citizens)
•    Summer Semester: 15 December (for non-EU citizens), 15 January (for EU citizens)


Please note that all application documents must be submitted as hard copies. Application documents will not be returned (regardless of whether you are admitted or not).
