Freshers' information

Everything seems new during your first term of study. Many things are done differently at the University of Freiburg than at your home university. This is why we have gathered on this web page the most important information for new students.

Matriculation (or enrollment)

After you have received your letter of acceptance, in order to study at the University of Freiburg you must matriculate (enroll) at the Registration Office (Studierendensekretariat for German nationals) or the International Admissions and Services Office (for international students). 

 

Fit4Ing

If you are a new student in the Bachelor's degree programs Embedded Systems Engineering or Microsystems Engineering, you can join the Fit4Ing program taking place on 5 and 6 October. For more information and registration, please go to Fit4Ing. 

 

Pre-course in Mathematics

Also for new undergraduate students, the senior students organised in the Fachschaft (students representation) will offer a pre-course in mathematics, taking place from 9 - 12 October. For more information and registration, please click here.

After the orientation meetings, you will find here the presentation slides (as PDFs) from the various meetings.

 

UniCard

A few weeks after matriculating as a student, you will receive a student ID card, the UniCard, by mail. You can find out more about what a UniCard is here.

 

Uni Account

After matriculation, you will also receive an e-mail and IT account for the University’s main IT services. This account is required to register for courses and exams. Find out more about the Uni-Account here

 

User account for the Faculty of Engineering

The Faculty of Engineering has a lab with computers and printers for students in Building 082. You can register for a user account with the computer pool managers in building 082, 1st floor, opposite the entry to the cafeteria.

 

User account for the library

Your UniCard is also your library card for the University Library (Universitätsbibliothek, UB). Before your library card can be activated, you have to register here.

 

WiFi (or WLan)

On the campus of the Faculty of Engineerng, you have got access to WiFi. To find out how to connect to our wireless networks on your computer here .

 

Select and book your courses:

You should register for each course (subject) you want to take in the coming semester. This is called course booking. It is recommended to do that after having attended the orienation meetings so that you know which courses you can select. On the following website, you can find out how to book your courses.

 

Semester ticket

With the Semesterticket you can use all public transportation in and around Freiburg for six months at the cost of 94 Euros. The semester ticket for the winter semester is valid from 1 October to 31 March, for the summer semester it is valid from 1 April until 30 September. Even if you do not have a semster ticket, your student id enables you to use the public transport in Freiburg after 7:30 p.m. till the end of the night service.
