Information for students with a degree from a university of applied sciences
Students with a degree from a university of applied sciences are allowed to obtain a PhD degree from the Faculty of Engineering provided they meet certain requirements.
According to the regulations for PhD degrees of the Faculty of Engineering students with degree from a university of applied sciences may be accepted as PhD candidates if they have a finale grade of at least 2.0 and if they can prove their knowledge in a suitability test.
This qualification process must be completed withintwo semesters after beginning the PhD programm.
Please submit the following documents:
- Two letters of reference by professors from the university of applied sciences which you attended
- A copy of your degree certificate from the university of applied sciences
- A CV or résumé
- An application form with a detailed plan of the courses you plan to attend (in agreement with your supervisor and the Dean of Studies)
There are the sole conditions stated in the regulations for PhD degrees.
PhD candidates must to attend courses amounting to 24 semester hours. Half of these coures should be foundational courses and the other half should be in the area of your research topic for your PhD thesis.
Successful participation in the courses will be verified by course examination. No final examinations outside of the courses arenecessary. The grades for these examinations have no influence on your degree (a certificate verifying successful participation is sufficient).
Please address your application to the Postgraduate Studies Committee (Promotionsausschuss). Please include the courses you plan to attend, the expected examination procedures and the time frame in which you expect to complete the programme. The latter is necessary because students with a degree of a university of applied sciences are allowed to apply to a PhD degree programme during the semester (outside normal deadlines).
