Research at the Faculty of Engineering

The Faculty of Engineering of the University of Freiburg consists of the Department of Computer Science and the Department of Microsystems Engineering. The Faculty is also located close to five Fraunhofer Institutes and the Institut für Mikrotechnik und Informationstechnik der Hahn-Schickard-Gesellschaft e.V. (HSG-IMIT). This unique constellation within Germany provides ideal surroundings for top research.
Our scientific papers are regularly presented at the most prestigious national and international conferences and are published in the most important scientific journals. Research and teaching are closely connected, and the exchange across institutional borders is daily practice at our Faculty.

Top research: Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Prize
In 2008 and 2009, the German Research Foundation (DFG) awarded the professors Susanne Albers and Wolfram Burgard, two scientists from the Department of Computer Science in Freiburg, with the most prestigious research prize for outstanding scientific and academic achievement.

Excellent opportunities for young researchers
We promote young researchers by awarding 40 to 50 doctorate degrees and several habilitations each year and establishing junior professorships.

Outstanding infrastructure
Our campus is new and has highly modern laboratories and a cleanroom. We offer the perfect conditions for students and researchers.

Attractive to external funders
In 2009, the Faculty of Engineering was the beneficiary of €17.3m in external funds. External funds provide valuable financial resources to research and are earned in competition with other external institutions. Securing external funds is an indication, among other things, of how attractive our project ideas and visions are to external reviewers and funders.
