The professorship is expected to focus on sustainable, resource-saving materials, for example polymer composite materials. The focus should be on material design and processing, i.e., fundamental processing technology guided by modelling and experiment. It will be advantageous to contribute projects to the Freiburg Center for Interactive Materials and Bioinspired Technologies (FIT) with its infrastructure (roll-to-roll polymer technology, 3D visualization with tomography) and to use generative fabrication methods available at the Department of Microsystems Engineering (IMTEK). The professorship is expected to establish cooperations with the other core activities at the Faculty of Engineering. Collaborations with the Faculty of Chemistry and Pharmacy and with the local Fraunhofer Institutes are welcome. Furthermore the new professorship shall play an active role in planning and establishing the Department of Sustainable Systems Engineering.

Teaching by the professorship will contribute to the interfaculty Master of Science program Sustainable Materials and the planned curricula in the area of Sustainable Systems Engineering.
